Why I ride... Motorcycle is an extension of my body and a part of my soul.

My name is Gilles. I am a 63-year-old Frenchman (nobody is perfect), currently living in the town of Cafayate, in the province of Salta, Northwest Argentina. I am a Motorcycle Group Leader for a company called Vintage Rides, which offers road trips to motorcycle enthusiasts. These trips can last up to 14 days and include everything you need for an unforgettable journey: the motorcycle, food, lodgings, a support truck with a mechanic/driver, petrol, and a guide (yours truly) for the entire trip.

Living and working in this role has taken me to some of the most beautiful and scenic roads in Northwest Argentina and Chile, as well as the breathtaking landscapes of Argentinian and Chilean Patagonia. Each trip is an adventure, a chance to explore new horizons, and to experience the thrill of the open road.

Cafayate, where I have chosen to settle, is a gem in the heart of Argentina's wine country. Nestled in the Calchaquí Valleys, it's a town known for its stunning landscapes, vibrant culture, and, of course, its excellent wines. The town is surrounded by vineyards and bodegas, making it a paradise for wine lovers. The dramatic terrain, with its red rock formations and vast desert landscapes, provides a perfect backdrop for motorcycling.

I came to Cafayate through my wife. Even though she is a pure Porteña (a term for people born and bred in central Buenos Aires), her family hails from the province of Salta. One day, while we were on vacation in Buenos Aires, she asked me if I wanted to see where her family comes from. So, we jumped on our motorcycle and headed to Salta. As soon as we arrived, I fell in love with the place—it is truly a motorcycle rider's paradise. The stunning landscapes and winding roads captivated me, making it clear that this was where I wanted to be.

Before I delve deeper into my current role, let me take you on a journey through my past. I originally come from the hospitality industry, where I spent the past 40 years working in restaurants and hotels. My journey began as a commis de restaurant and eventually led me to become the General Manager of luxurious boutique hotels. This career took me to live in 14 countries across four continents, each experience enriching my understanding of hospitality and broadening my cultural horizons.

My passion for motorcycles has always been a constant in my life, but my career in the hospitality industry and my extensive travels often prevented me from fully indulging in this love. Despite the demands of my professional journey, the thrill of riding a motorcycle remained a dream I held onto, waiting for the right moment to embrace it fully.

Before settling in Cafayate and joining Vintage Rides, my love for motorcycles took me on incredible journeys through Peru and Bolivia, where I explored some of the most iconic places these countries have to offer. In Peru, I rode to Cuzco, the Sacred Valley, Lake Titicaca, Colca Canyon, and Arequipa, experiencing the rich culture and breathtaking landscapes. My adventures in Bolivia led me to Tarija, Potosi, Sucre, and the awe-inspiring Uyuni Salt Lake, each destination leaving an indelible mark on my soul and fuelling my passion for the open road.

My dream became a reality when I joined Vintage Rides. The company shares my vision of adventure and discovery, offering meticulously planned tours that cater to both seasoned riders and newcomers. Our trips are designed to provide a perfect balance of thrilling rides, cultural immersion, and relaxation. Whether it's a challenging mountain pass or a leisurely ride through scenic vineyards, each route is carefully chosen to showcase the best of the region.

As a Motorcycle Group Leader, my role goes beyond just guiding the tours. I am responsible for ensuring the safety and well-being of our riders, coordinating logistics, and providing support and assistance whenever needed. It's a job that requires understanding motorcycles, navigational skills, and a genuine passion for people and travel.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is witnessing the transformation that occurs in our riders over the course of the trip. Many arrive with a mix of excitement and apprehension, unsure of what to expect. But as the days go by, they become more confident, more connected with their bikes, and more attuned to the rhythm of the road. The camaraderie that develops within the group is incredible, with riders supporting and encouraging each other through every twist and turn.

Our journeys through Northwest Argentina and Chile are particularly special. The region is a motorcyclist's paradise, with its diverse landscapes, challenging roads, and rich cultural heritage. From the rugged mountains and high-altitude deserts to the lush valleys and bustling towns, each day brings new and unforgettable experiences. Riding through the Andes, for example, is an awe-inspiring adventure. The dramatic scenery, with its towering peaks and deep valleys, is matched by the thrill of navigating the winding mountain roads. The high-altitude passes, some reaching over 4,000 meters, offer breathtaking views and a sense of achievement that is hard to describe.

Patagonia, on the other hand, presents a different kind of beauty. The vast landscapes, with their windswept plains and pristine lakes, create a sense of solitude and tranquillity. The roads here are perfect for cruising at a steady pace and soaking in the stunning surroundings. Riding through Patagonia is like stepping into a different world, one where nature reigns supreme and every moment is filled with awe.

In addition to the natural beauty, our tours also provide a deep dive into the local culture. We visit traditional villages, interact with the local communities, and sample the delicious cuisine. Whether it's enjoying a traditional Argentine asado, sipping Chilean wine, or learning about the indigenous heritage of the region, these experiences add a rich and meaningful dimension to our journeys.

In conclusion, being a Motorcycle Group Leader for Vintage Rides has allowed me to combine my love for motorcycles with my passion for travel and adventure. It's a role that challenges me, inspires me, and fills me with a sense of purpose. Every trip is a new adventure, a chance to explore the world and share the joy of motorcycling with others. And as long as there are roads to ride and horizons to chase, I will continue to embrace this incredible journey.
